There are trainings, degrees and accreditations for all kinds of skills, but not for a subject that is most crucial for our well-being - parenting. No schools, no colleges, no training and no degrees! According to Dr Shekhar Seshadri, senior professor at the National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (NIMHANS), Bangalore, there is a real need for education on parenting.
In an attempt to meet this pressing need, NIMHANS has launched a 10-part video series on parenting, titled "Parenting Pathshala", which translates into "The School of Parenting". In this series, Dr Seshadri discusses various aspects of parenting with child and parenting experts. The discussions cover a wide range of very relevant issues in parenting such as parenting children with special needs, how to discuss romantic and sexual relationships with teens and much more. With insights from child protection and mental health experts, these talks are informative and helpful in tackling day to day issues faced by parents.
The Parenting Pathshala series is undertaken by the National Initiative & Integrated Resource for Child Protection, Mental Health, and Psychosocial Care by NIMHAMS. This initiative was created with the aim of enhancing child and adolescent psychosocial well-being, through the promotion of integrated approaches to mental health and protection.
The initiative comprises of a multi-disciplinary team of childcare professionals, with expertise in training and capacity building, program, policy, and research pertaining to child mental health and welfare.
