Hi Rekha,

Frequent colds and coughs are very common in school-age children. These infections are a normal part of the immune system learning to fight germs.

Here are some tips to help your child stay healthy and support his immune system:

  1. Serve healthy, balanced meals: Include fruits, vegetables, whole grains, pulses, dairy products, eggs, fish, or other protein-rich foods. Focus on foods rich in vitamins C and A, such as citrus fruits, guava, carrots, pumpkin, spinach, and sweet potatoes.
  2. Keep the gut healthy: Yogurt, curd, buttermilk, and other fermented foods can support a healthy balance of good bacteria in the gut, which plays an important role in immunity.
  3. Encourage plenty of fluids: Water should be the main drink. Fresh coconut water and homemade soups can also help keep children hydrated. Limit sugary drinks, packaged juices, and soft drinks.
  4. Limit highly processed foods: Chips, biscuits, instant noodles, candies, and sugary snacks should be occasional treats rather than everyday foods, as they are often high in sugar, salt, and unhealthy fats.

Along with a healthy, balanced diet, make sure your child gets 9–12 hours of sleep every night, enjoys at least 1 hour of active play each day, and follows good hygiene habits, such as washing hands regularly and covering the mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing. These simple daily habits help keep the immune system healthy and reduce the risk of infections. There is no single food or supplement that can boost immunity, but a healthy lifestyle helps the body fight infections more effectively.

Hope this helps!
