This Republic Day, let the spirit of freedom soar high by indulging in some fun activities! Disappointed about not making it to the grand Republic Day parade in New Delhi? Fret not for there are plenty of other Republic Day-related events in your very own cities. From an exciting athletics meet to a fun walk, from a flower show to some interesting art and craft workshops - we have a list of events you can go to as a family in Bangalore, Chennai Kochi. Take a look!
Venue: Lalbagh Botanical Garden, Mavalli, Bangalore - 560004
Time: 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. ( from 17 January to 28 January)
Fee: Children Rs 20, for adults, Rs 70.
Take time out to visit the spectacular R-day special flower show with your child and immerse in the world of colourful flowers. Lalbagh Botanical Garden is all set to host the bi-annual flower show. This year, the flower show will showcase the life and times of philosopher and social worker, Swami Vivekananda, to mark the saint's 157th birth anniversary. Apart from other eye-catching flower installations, get ready to witness a flowery recreation of the Vivekananda Rock Memorial in Kanyakumari in the Glass House inside Lalbagh. A massive six lakhs flowers are expected to be used in this year's flower show.
Apart from that, there is a display of carnivorous and insectivorous plants to pique your child's 'green' curiosity! Make sure you do not litter the place as the authorities are requesting the visitors to make it a litter-free zone.
Venue: Field Marshal Manekshaw Parade Ground
Timing: 8:00 a.m. onwards
What's Republic Day without witnessing the good old parade and hoisting of the flag? Head to Field Marshal Manekshaw Parade Ground to witness the synchronised parade performed by school students and NCC cadets.
After the ceremonies, head towards a cultural fair next to the ground. Browse through the unique products from all over India in the fair. If you are hungry, there are numerous food stalls to cater to your needs.

Time: 12:00 p.m. onwards

If you think Republic Day is only about parades and flag-hoisting, you could not be more wrong. Soak up some sun along with your children and pets this Republic Day. Make it a day to remember as the venue hosts a curated flea market, food carts, live grills and food trucks.
Let your child enjoy themselves as there is a play area, ball pit, trampoline and STEAM (Science, Theatre, Engineering, Art and Music) based activities. Let your child have his share of 'Vitamin Sun' with some innovative outdoor games. There are plenty of activities to keep them engaged and entertained like pottery, caricature artist, tattoo artist, tarot reading, and foosball. What's more? Your four-legged friends too can join the fun as it is a pet-friendly event.

Time: 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Is your son addicted to the 'beautiful game'? Do you have a budding Messi or Ronaldo at home? If so, on this Republic Day, your child can hone his skills in a football tournament organised by the Titans Sports Football Club.
Venue: Daily Dump, 12th A Main Road, HAL 2nd Stage, Indiranagar, Bangalore
Time: 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 a.m.

How about a lesson on our national symbols on this Republic Day for a change? Take your child for an enriching session on national symbols facilitated by Shruti Jha, who founded an initiative named Green Panther to bring environmental awareness among young children.
Do you know the history behind each of our national symbols or what made them special? Your child will know all about it and more, as the session intends to inspire the children to learn the importance and needs of our national symbols through some engaging activities like art/craft.

Venue: Sports Development Authority of Tamilnadu, Poonamallee High Road, Sastry Nagar, Nehru Park, Chennai
Time: 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. (Reporting time 9 a.m.)
Fee: Rs 200
This Republic Day show your child's 'sporty' side and take part in an athletics meet. Run, relay, high jump and much more. Take note, however, that each participant can take part in two events only. All the registered participants for the event will get a participation medal and certificate. Winners get a medal and merit certificate. Apart from that, two gold medal winners will get the IC trophy.
Venue: Decathlon, Mogappair
Time: 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.
Fee: Rs 299
Does your heart swell when your child performs in front of an audience? Every parent takes pride in their child's achievement. Is your child good at storytelling or speaks eloquently on a topic? If your child is between 3 to 15 years and has some talent, show it to the world. The R-day Kids Talent show is that platform for your child where they can showcase their inner talent in front of an audience.
In the story-telling session, which is open to children between 3-6 years, the child is expected to tell a story within three minutes. In the Pechu Potti section, children between 6 to 9 years can participate. In this segment, they would speak on some selected topics for five minutes. The last section is Thirukkuralum-Vilakkamum, which is open for children aged 9 to 12 years.

Time: 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 a.m.
Want your children to imbibe healthy habits? Why not start on R-day. Take your child to this children's fun walk and encourage them to be physically active. All the participating children will get medals and certificate of participation. Refreshments will be provided to the participating kids.
Venue: SDAT Nehru Park, Chennai
Time: 8:00 a.m.
Fee: Rs 600 (includes t-shirt and bag among other things)

Do you know that developing healthy habits early in life help you lead a healthy life later? The Kids Dream Run 2020 is organised to promote the habit of running among children. This event is a non-competitive run, which aims to make running fun for children. If your child is very young, one parent can participate in the run. Healthy refreshments will be provided after the run. This event is open for children between 4 years to 12 years. The run categories are 100m, 200m, 400m and 800m. So, what's stopping you, go for it!

Time: 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.
Republic Day celebrations in Kochi never sounded so fun and 'colourful'. If you are in Kochi, then head towards the Centre Square Mall along with your child where she can paint and exhibit her talent to the world. Children below 16 years can participate in the competition. The theme of the painting competition is 'Indian Republic'. Participants would be given a canvas sheet for painting but they must bring their own colours.
Venue: Govt. U P School Puttumanoor, Puthenkurish, Kerala
Time: 8:00 a.m.
This Republic Day go for a run and pledge to keep fit as a family. This event is organised by a team of experienced runners. The event has three categories, Half Marathon, 10K run and 5K run.
So, this Republic Day, you know what to do! Don't let it go past as just another national holiday. If you want to raise a patriotic and respectful child, consciously try to inculcate the value of patriotism. Taking them out for the Republic Day parade and other related events and telling them about our freedom struggle could be a starting point.
