Self-care—a well-known term, often described as a practice of maintaining one’s physical, mental, and emotional health.
As a hardworking housewife and mother, I would say it often feels like a luxury. Mothers tend to prioritise their family’s needs, neglecting their own, which leads to both physical and psychological consequences.
Why do mothers often forget self-care?
It is an undeniable reality that mothers are expected—and conditioned—to put their family first. Sacrifices are seen as the norm. As a woman, she has her own desires and ambitions, but as a mother, she is often defined only by her responsibilities.
Challenges a mother faces every day:
• Lack of time and overwhelming responsibilities with very little space for rest and leisure.
• Sleep deprivation due to pregnancy and post-pregnancy demands.
• Limited help despite constant demands from all sides.
• Financial stress that adds to mental pressure.
• Guilt—even a few minutes for herself feels undeserved.
• Postpartum struggles like isolation, mood swings, and sometimes depression— they are not understood or supported.
• Less social interaction, leading to disconnection from loved ones.
Simple self-care ideas for moms:
- Take a short walk while the baby naps
- Join a mom’s support group
- Make time for small hobbies
- Practice deep breathing during stress
- Seek help when needed
I believe it is time for mothers to realise that self-care is not an offence, but a necessity. No one is perfect—not even mothers. Taking care of yourself is not being selfish; it is the only way to keep going and truly be there for your loved ones.
