Oh, the things kids say! We got a few parents to share some of their hilarious ‘laugh out loud’ (LOL) moments from their parenting journey, and we must say we were blown away

There is never a dull moment with kids. We watch them do and say the funniest (sometimes embarrassing) things, and somehow, they make the stress disappear. The parenting journey is a little less stressful because of these laugh-out-loud moments, wouldn’t you say? Sometimes we also share the limelight with them, and together with our children, we are a laugh riot. We asked a few parents what their LOL parenting moments were, and they delivered! From curious questions to funny habits, here are some of the rib-tickling narratives that made them LOL.
My kiddo has recently started having his meals on his own. He has his lunch at school, so he started the practice. However, sometimes he doesn’t want to eat by himself at home and wants me to feed him. I asked him why, as he knows how to eat on his own, and this was his cheeky reply: “Mummy, don’t I eat by myself at school? So, at home, I want to rest and be fed. This way I don’t get tired by eating.” He quickly added, “Also, I love it when you feed me.”

We were visiting the Bannerghatta National Park in our city with our 5.5-year-old daughter, Riia. After spending time at the zoo, we walked into the Butterfly Park in the same campus. Ria looked thoughtful as she watched the butterflies flutter by. “What’s the matter?” I asked her, and still deep in thought, she said, “Why isn’t a butterfly made of butter? Why are they called butterflies then?” Funny as it was, we were happy she was asking questions about the things around her. It also lightened the mood of the family after a long day at the zoo!

My son (20 months old) is learning new words every day. He has learned to say my name now and often says it out loud at home. The other day we were at the theater, watching a movie. During the break, I left my son with my husband to go to the restroom. Suddenly, he started shouting out my name: “Swathi! Swathi!” I whipped around, and after a moment of realization, everyone around us started laughing. My husband had a shocked look on his face. “He made it look like I had kidnapped him!” he said, with a half-amused, half-bewildered look on his face.

When our daughter was about 6 years old, we visited Bhutan in the winter. It was freezing at the time. Our daughter developed a habit then—every time we had to step out, she would stop talking, as she felt she could handle the freezing weather better then. She is almost 12 now, and whenever she talks loudly or argues with us, my husband and I joke saying, “Let’s go to Bhutan!” and we have a good laugh.

I was teaching my daughter, Mohor, one night, and maybe I was talking too fast, and a little spit came out of my mouth. She immediately got up and went to the other room. Meanwhile, I was thinking, “Why did she leave? Am I pushing her too hard to study?” She reappeared a few moments later with a mask in hand. Then she told me in her unique style, “Mama, please put this on, or I think you will make me fall sick before I grasp the topic!”

A dash of humor can indeed make your parenting journey a little more enjoyable, and these stories are proof of that. You can use humor to diffuse stressful situations between your child and you, while also letting them know that you can be the cool parent they can reach out to any time. Remember to laugh out loud with your child now and then to help them enjoy the little moments with you.
