Nutritional Requirements During Lactation: A Pediatrician Shares Tips For Moms

For the well-being of both lactating mothers and their newborns, it is important to understand why they need optimal nutrition.

Maternal Nutrient Needs

Breastfeeding not only offers numerous health benefits to infants but also strengthens the bond between mother and child. Also, the nutrients in breast milk come from the mother’s diet or from her nutrient reserves. Hence, it is important to know what kind of nutrition intake can help mothers enhance their milk supply and increase the immunity of the newborn.

  • Adequate caloric intake: Breastfeeding requires extra energy; so if you are a breastfeeding mother, you must consume more calories than usual. Aiming for an additional 500 calories per day during lactation helps avoid fatigue and restores energy. These extra calories should come from nutrient-dense foods such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats.
  • Hydration: Staying hydrated is important, as it helps maintain milk production. Aim for at least 8–10 glasses of water, and drink it throughout the day.
  • Protein-rich foods: Including an adequate amount of protein in your diet is essential for milk production and the growth and development of your newborn. Good sources of protein include lean meats, poultry, fish, legumes, nuts, and dairy products. Incorporate a variety of these protein-rich foods into your meals and snacks to meet your daily requirements.
  • Omega-3 fatty acids: Omega-3 fatty acids play a crucial role in the development of your baby’s brain and eyes. Include fatty fish like salmon, trout, and sardines in your diet, as they are excellent sources of omega-3 fatty acids.

If you follow a vegetarian diet, you have options like flaxseeds, chia seeds, and walnuts to be included in your diet. If necessary, consider taking a DHA supplement after consulting with your healthcare provider.

  • Vitamins and minerals: A balanced diet rich in vitamins and minerals is essential for both you and your baby. Focus on consuming foods high in calcium, iron, zinc, vitamin D, and vitamin C. Calcium-rich foods such as dairy products, leafy greens, and fortified plant-based milk alternatives help promote bone health. Iron-rich foods like lean red meat, poultry, legumes, and dark leafy greens aid in preventing anemia. Adequate zinc intake supports a healthy immune system, while vitamins D and C contribute to overall immunity.
  • Incorporate galactagogues: Certain foods are believed to have galactagogue properties, which means they can help increase milk supply. While there is not a lot of scientific evidence, some popular galactagogues include oats, fenugreek, and fennel. Consider adding these foods to your diet.
  • Limit processed foods and sugar: To optimize your health and your baby’s, limit the consumption of processed foods and added sugars. Processed foods are often high in unhealthy fats, sodium, and additives, while excess sugar can lead to weight gain and increase the risk of chronic diseases. Instead, opt for whole, unprocessed foods that provide essential nutrients and promote overall well-being.

As a new mom, always prioritize personal well-being through a nutrient-rich diet and healthy eating practices. It will not only nourish you but also provide the best foundation for your baby’s growth, immune system, and overall health. Always talk to your healthcare provider about what is okay for your body, as everyone’s body is different.
