Tiny backpacks, new shoes, a new classroom—and sometimes a few tears. The first day of preschool can be exciting and emotional for both children and parents.
Here are a few simple ways to make the transition smoother:
1. Make the unfamiliar familiar
Talk about preschool before the first day. Visit the school, meet the teacher, and let your child see the classroom.
2. Practise saying goodbye
Start with short separations at home. This helps your child learn an important lesson: Mum or Dad leaves, but always comes back.
3. Give them small responsibilities
Let your child pack their bag, put on their shoes, or carry their water bottle. Small tasks build independence and confidence.
4. Keep the goodbye short and warm
A hug, a smile, and a simple “I'll see you after school” can be enough. Avoid sneaking away or stretching out the goodbye.
5. Don't rush the adjustment
Some children settle in quickly; others need more time. Avoid comparisons and celebrate small steps instead.
With patience, reassurance, and a little preparation, those first hesitant steps into preschool can become the beginning of a wonderful new journey.
