In a homophobic place like India, Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan is a breath of fresh air. It shares the stories of the queer community of India in a funny, light-hearted, and non-offensive way!

Story line

Aman and Karthik, two young men from Delhi, are in love. But, what does their love mean to an orthodox Indian family that thinks homosexuality is a sin? Aman and Karthik hatch a plan to get Aman's parents to accept their love. In doing so, the movie brings us drama, comedy, and heart-warming moments.

Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan is on the better side of alright. While it certainly is an amazing movie, it comes with its flaws. The movie is funny and entertaining, but these aspects also cause the movie to fail in some places.

The humour in this movie is well-written. The old Bollywood references, innuendos, the run-away bride, and the sassy mother all proved to be effective elements of humour. The whole theatre laughed at every joke, and so will you. The jokes were (mostly) tasteful, and they were not offensive. The writers did a great job. It was hard to keep a straight face.

Groove to the beats

Another brilliant aspect of the movie was the songs. This movie gave us catchy songs with meaningful lyrics. The choreography, the costumes, the set and the general vibe of it made the movie a truly entertaining watch. Songs go a long way to popularise a movie, and this movie does a great job in this department as well. The last song is sure to get you hooked!

Right casting

The casting was phenomenal! Neena Gupta was great as the mother. She delivered a lot of the punchlines, and perfectly captured the essence of a small-town family. Gajraj Rao, as the father, did a great job portraying the strong patriarch. Maanvi Gagroo's Goggle Tripathi was dynamic, with both serious moments, and funny ones. However, the main characters - Ayushmann Khurrana and Jitendra Kumar - stole the show. They played a very believable couple and brought about heart-warming moments. The casting for the movie was perfect in every sense.

I applaud the filmmakers for coming up with something like this. It is a well-made, memorable, funny, and well-promoted movie. A movie like this can go a long way in normalising the LGBTQ+ community to the conservative Indian folks. But, the cast and crew have said some homophobic things about effeminate gay men. While that doesn't effect the movie, it does make me lose trust in the writers.

The movie is much too focused on comedy, and this takes a toll on the message of the movie. While they did try hard to include serious bits, they trivialise most of the seriousness and try to squeeze in jokes everywhere. Homophobia is joked about, and it's hard to take away a serious message out of the movie. It also wasn't right of Karthik to pressure Aman into coming out. Coming out should be of a person's own accord.

Mixed bag

Another critic point is that the movie adds too many sub-plots and does a bad job resolving most of them. The ending scenes have too many elements. It gets confusing and pretty muddled, and once again, that lessens the impact of what the movie tries to convey.

While the movie does have its flaws, Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan proves to be a funny, wholesome movie. It is definitely worth a watch. You are sure to enjoy the songs, jokes, and characters!
