Children don't ask Why to annoy you or to test your intelligence. Then what's the motive?

Why
Why
Why
Why

The child you see asking all those questions, well, that was me! Whether it was at home or school, I was always asking, Why? Why? Why? In class, I was the one constantly bombarding the teacher with questions.

At home, I was often labeled defiant, stubborn, and adamant. But asking the why question was not an act of defiance. I just needed to know why I had to do something. My brain needed to understand the reason behind why I had to do something. So, responses like, "Because I said so" or "Stop asking so many questions" or "Just do it," only left me all confused and frustrated.

I just needed to know why I had to do something. My brain needed to understand the reason behind why I had to do something. I must confess that even now I continue to ask questions because I need to know the details to complete the picture in my brain. I'm still often told, "Why do you need to know? That's not relevant." But my brain screams, Yes, I need to know. I still don't have the complete picture.

A couple of years ago, as I was researching the characteristics of introverts, I realized the reason for my questioning. The brains of introverts like me need to know the details of everything to complete the circuits of information in the brain. Just knowing this has made me understand myself better, and it has given me more confidence to continue asking questions.

So, the next time you tell your child to do something and your child asks you Why, instead of saying, "Because I said so", or "Stop asking why, why, why, and just listen to what I say," just pause, and take a deep breath. Take a moment to give your child a clear explanation. They're probably just trying to understand and learn the reason behind what you are telling them to do. Once they understand, chances are they will be more willing to cooperate with you!
