"As a mom of two boys, I have always tried to ensure that they're not gender-biased, but kids can surprise you. One day, we were pretend-playing together - my elder one was an alien with superpowers and I was a human. In the middle of our game, I 'gained' karate skills so I could fight back. My son's reply to that shocked me.
"Mamma, you can't do that because girls can't fight!" Taken aback, I asked him why, and he said, "We see it everywhere, in all movies and stories. The boys do all the fighting to save the girls," he said with total conviction. I realized then that my kids were also being influenced by what they saw and heard."
So here's what I did... - Took effort to find storybooks and movies that portrayed girls or women as main characters - Encouraged them to read stories that had women protagonists - Involved them in cooking, cleaning, and doing laundry - Taught them basic sewing and mending - Slowly changed their perspective on 'gender-specific' roles
