    Teens’ Top Questions About Puberty

Team ParentCircle Answered by Team ParentCircle

    1. I’m a 14-year-old boy, and I have erections every morning when I wake up. Is this normal? Another embarrassing part of puberty is having wet dreams. What should I do?

It’s normal and healthy for boys to have erections every day on waking up or to have wet dreams during puberty (ages 13–17). The frequency of these events may differ in every boy, so please do not compare. Wet dreams and early morning erections reduce on their own as you grow older. You cannot stop them, so just keep an extra pair of undergarments if you’re at a friend’s place or traveling.

    2. I’m a 13-year-old girl, and I’ve been having excessive body odor ever since I started experiencing signs of puberty. How do I make it go away?

Body odor is a part of growing up. It will get better gradually. You can follow hygienic practices, such as taking a shower daily, especially after a workout, and wearing clean clothes and socks. You may also try using deodorants—look for natural, kid-friendly ones, as these are free of toxins like aluminum compounds and parabens. Test any new product on a small patch of skin to see if it causes allergic reactions. If body odor still persists and is very worrisome, meet your doctor for a checkup.

    3. I’m a 13-year-old girl, with hair growth on my genitals and underarms. I’m scared of waxing. Do you recommend shaving?

You may try what works best for you—having hair versus removing underarm and pubic hair. There are many teens who let their hair be. After all, being natural is the new trend. If you want to remove the hair, you can discuss with your parents all possible options and the pros and cons of various techniques. There are no set guidelines on what’s the best age to start removing hair, but generally speaking, 13–15 years is a good age for hair removal. Waxing and hair removal creams can be harsh on sensitive skin. So, shaving can be an option till you’re comfortable with other treatments. Gently exfoliate the pubic area before using a razor, apply a good amount of shaving cream and shave in the direction of the hair growth. Rinse off with warm water and pat your skin dry. Apply a gentle moisturizer.

    4. I hate having pimples on my face. How do I prevent them?

Pimples and acne are common in teens. Avoid over washing your face and using harsh scrubs, as they can leave your skin dry and trigger more oil production. Use an oil-free moisturizer or non-clogging products. Drink plenty of water, exercise daily and don’t get stressed about pimples. You will grow out your pimples when you’re older. If you get pimples, do not pop them. Wash your face twice a day with a gentle face wash and then apply a moisturizer. Seek a dermatologist’s help if the pimples get painful or become large with pus, or if a scar forms after a pimple heals.
