One of the most-loved festivals of India, Pongal or Makar Sankranti is a festival which is integral to the communities that celebrate it, in all its glory and fervor.
Basically, a harvest festival is celebrated in its true sense by rural communities, but preparations for the festival are rife in urban areas as well. People get together with families or for community feasts and they prepare and share special homemade sweets on this occasion. And different communities prepare different types of dishes to mark the occasion.
Sugarcane, kites, decorative earthen pots, colorful designs or kolam or rangoli, worshiping cows are all closely linked to the festivities.
Homes are cleaned and tidied to welcome the festival. They are also adorned with garlands made from mango-leaves or marigolds. Colorful intricate rangoli designs can be found at the doorstep. As part of the festivities, farmers decorate their cows too.
