It can be hard to watch your child struggle with self-doubt during their academic journey. Low confidence can affect their focus, motivation, and performance. This article shares simple, practical ways to help students build self-confidence, stay positive, and approach studies and exams with greater self-belief

Self-confidence is rarely discussed among students, largely because everyone is so engrossed in their daily routine. A student's life mostly revolves around studies, school, tuition, and homework. The realisation that someone may be having difficulty with confidence is often a far-fetched thought. But confidence, especially in the formative years, is crucial for many reasons. It is even more vital as a student enters higher classes and starts studying for competitive examinations. With ample self-confidence, a student is more likely to achieve better results as they are more motivated and have a sense of purpose.
Improving self-confidence is key to solving many problems students face today. Poor results, lack of concentration, or even fear of failure can be addressed if students have better self-esteem. Hence, students presently in class 10 must read this carefully, as the next two school years will be significant in many ways. Their preparations should include sports, studies, applying for scholarships, participating in Olympiads, and everything else, as part of their everyday goal to boost self-confidence.
Visualising goals is often underrated. It is one of the best ways to achieve dreams. By imagining their goals, a student can be motivated to carry out a task. Visualising is a technique of seeing your goal or where you want to be, in your mind. It helps give students a better perspective. What's more, perception is necessary, as it can help achieve goals that may seem far right now.
Practise positive thinking every day
Positive thinking has many benefits, including increased self-confidence, better motivation, and a drive to do better. Replace negative thoughts with positive ones. If you have a fear of failure, tell yourself, "What if I do well?" Notice how your thoughts and emotions become more positive. Indulge in healthy activities, take part in sports, win and lose, but always be optimistic. The most exceptional works in human history were accomplished because someone was thinking positively.
Anyone, not just students who believe in 'fate', will perhaps have a 'comfort zone'. A student who appears in JEE, NEET, or IAS exams is likely to feel insecure about their future. But turn the insecurity into a blessing, an opportunity to beat that feeling and show your true worth. Facing fears head-on is one of the best things a student can do to achieve their dreams. The best way to do it is by putting yourself in situations that might seem impossible at first. For instance, if your performance is average, you would not imagine that you could one day sit in a scholarship exam, let alone win a scholarship, right? However, the best way to prove yourself wrong is by actually doing it. Many coaching institutes provide scholarships for class 10 students to achieve their engineering or medical dreams. Give it a shot!
Be your friend. No one is asking you to be your best friend, but at least know yourself from within. Know what drives and motivates you, and then work on achieving your goals. Having a thorough understanding of yourself is essential. However, if it is not happening or you are having trouble finding yourself, work on the task at hand. If you have an exam in two weeks, study for it and do not waste your time. Make a list of things you are good at and things you need to improve, things you would like to change about yourself, and your future goals. Work on them one by one, and in the process, you will rediscover yourself.
Embrace healthy competition
Competition can be the best motivator for students. Taking it in a positive spirit increases efficiency and helps students lay out their best version. Someone may be better than you in chemistry, and you may score better in mathematics. If it sounds too cliched, remember that by practising and studying with a decisive mind, you can indeed get what you want out of your education. Fight for knowledge, and not for scores.
No one should limit themselves, especially students who are in their formative years. When students are at a crossroads in their careers, they should have the required self-confidence to execute their decisions and move forward.
Confidence is built, not born
Students must remember that self-confidence is not something you either have or don’t, it is something you build over time. With the right mindset, habits, and support, every student can develop the confidence needed to face challenges and move forward with clarity and purpose.
There are many things a student can do to improve their confidence. Working on small steps one at a time is also important. Apart from that, be actively interested in creative arts or sports. Also, stop procrastinating, focus on solutions, and change habits that are slowing you down. Remember, everyone can instil self-confidence in themselves with the right approach.
