What Did Your Doctor Say About Your Babys Growth?
As parents, one of the biggest questions we all have is:
“Is my baby growing well?”
I recently came across a helpful guide on baby weight tracking for the first year, based on WHO growth standards. It highlights that:
- Babies may lose up to 10% of birth weight initially, which is normal
- Weight gain is fastest in the first 3 months, then gradually slows down
- Most babies double their birth weight by ~4–5 months and triple it by 1 year
- Growth pattern matters more than a single number
Sample Average Weight (50th percentile)
- Birth: ~3–3.5 kg
- 6 months: ~7–8 kg
- 12 months: ~9–10 kg
Let’s Discuss!
- Do you track your baby’s weight regularly? Or only during doctor visits?
- Has your baby followed a steady growth curve, or had ups and downs?
- Did you ever worry your baby was underweight or overweight? What helped reassure you?
- Breastfeeding vs formula vs solids — what worked best for your baby’s weight gain?
- How do you handle comparisons with other babies (which can be stressful!)?

This weight guide is really helpful and reassuring for new parents 😊
Our peditricain also told us something similar—that every baby grows at their own pace, and we shouldn’t worry too much about comparing with others. The point about growth pattern being more important than a single number is so true!
It’s comforting to know that some initial weight loss is normal and that steady growth over time is what really matters. Thanks for sharing this clear and informative guide!
