Let us celebrate our independence by educating our children about words related to patriotism and civics in part 11 of our special series, 'World of Words'.
1. ALLEGIANCE: Loyalty to one’s country, leader, group, etc.
2. ANTHEM: Song of special significance to a country or organization, which is sung on specific occasions
3. ARDOUR: Strong feelings of love and admiration
4. BIRTHRIGHT: One’s right because of the family or country one is born in; a basic right of all humans
5. CITIZENSHIP: The legal right of belonging to a particular country; the state of being a citizen, and the rights and responsibilities that go with it
7. CIVIL LIBERTY: People’s right to say or do whatever they want, provided it is within the law and respects other people’s rights
8. CIVIL RIGHTS: The basic rights of every person in society, such as the right to vote and the right to be treated equally
9. CONSTITUTION: A system of laws and a set of principles that a state or country is governed by
10. DEMOCRACY: A system of government that grants all citizens the right to vote and elect their representatives
11. DEVOTION: A great love and support for someone or something
12. EMANCIPATION: The act of giving someone the political, legal, or social rights they did not have before
13. FEDERALISM: A system of government in a country where individual states control their affairs while being controlled by the central government for national policies and decisions
14. FERVOUR: A very strong and sincere feeling about something
15. FLAG-WAVING: The expression of strong national feelings, especially in an extreme manner that is disapproving
16. FUNDAMENTAL DUTIES: The moral obligations of every citizen to strive for the country’s unity and spread the spirit of patriotism
17. FUNDAMENTAL RIGHTS: A written statement in the constitution about the basic rights of a country’s citizens
18. KEEP THE FLAG FLYING: To represent one’s country or organisation
19. LOYALTY: Being faithful to someone or something
20. NATIONALISM: A desire of a group of people of a particular race, culture, or language to form their own independent country; the feeling of love for one’s country and the feeling that it is better than any other
21. PARLIAMENT: A group of people elected to formulate and modify a country’s laws
22. PATRIOTISM: A love for one’s country
23. PUBLIC SPIRIT: Willingness to help everyone in society
24. REPUBLIC: A country governed by the people’s elected representatives who are led by a president and not a king or queen
25. SOVEREIGNTY: Complete freedom and power to govern a country
26. THE SPEAKER: Title of the person officially appointed to control discussions in a parliament
27. STAUNCH: Loyal in extending strong support to a person or organisation; loyal in opinions and attitudes
28. SUFFRAGE: The right to vote in political elections
29. THE INDIAN TRICOLOR: The national flag of India, which has three equal bands of different colors and a blue chakra
30. WAVE THE FLAG: Show support for a country or organization that you belong to and also encourage others to do the same
32. ZEAL: Great energy, enthusiasm, or eagerness connected to something one feels strongly about
