My niece is 21 and weighs only 42 kgs. She has a strong dislike for green vegetables and loves to eat parceled food. Every other day she demands fries, burgers or pizzas. Most of the time she will eat a packet of chips while returning from college. She is also very anaemic. We have tried to make her her understand about the ill-effects of junk food, but she does not seem to bother What can we do to convince her and change her eating habits/

I have a friend of mine who is also underweight and no matter how much she eats, her body weight is either the same or lesser. For certain body types, the metabolic rate varies which to a large extent determines their body weight. Just ensure that her bad eating habits do not crawl in too much and she is educated and corrected right now. My friend was also quite lethargic and inactive most of the time and she was anemic too. But soon she made it a point to start eating healthy and move around more often. I think a bad instance when witnessed will drastically change the way she is eating right now. Give her practical examples of people like her who are suffering now because of their bad eating habits. This will be like a burst of reality for her which may make her to seriously rethink her food and lifestyle choices.

My 18 year old daughter was suffering from obesity after she had to take medicines with steroids at the age of 14. In the first year of her college, she decided to reduce weight. I was very supportive of the decision but wanted her to lose weight gradually and in a healthy manner, rather than opting for fad diets or crash diets. Rather, the entire family was supportive of her decision and in about 20 months my daughter lost 23 kilos from 85 to 62 kg. She would eat a bowl of fruits in the morning, followed by boiled and sprouted lentil salad for lunch. Sometimes, she would snack on figs, dates or dry fruits to satiate her mid-morning hunger. In the evening after returning from college I would make her a nice dish of sauted vegetables with a half-boiled egg or poha, upma or Gram flour chila. For dinner she would take a dish of boiled and seasoned veggies with grilled chicken or fish. Saturdays were her cheat days and she chose to indulge in different types of food. Along with a healthy diet she would do 45 minutes of Yoga every morning. It is really encouraging to see her grow up to be a young 23 year-old, who is healthier and fitter than before.
