Hi Priya. My daughter is 6.5yrs old. She eats only curd rice. I tried lot of tasty and healthy recipes but all went in vain. Does curd provide enough nutritional value for my kid.

Curd does provide good nutrition, but only curd and rice isn't enough for a growing child. Since how long has she been doing this?

My son likes only potato fries, tried all other vegetables. Not even a bit he tries. I am worried, he eats only potato. He is not obese. But I fear he might. How can I stop him eating Potato and make him love other vegetables. I tried all varieties, I even tried veg cutlet, vada and tried new recipes from youtube, but still he is not showing interests.

Priya Kathpal Jan 6, 2018

@Team ParentCircle

Stop trying so hard but start giving him options. Have you tried giving in salad form like cucumber or carrot sticks? Also restrict getting potatoes at home for some days and tell him its no longer available. Give other options and see how it goes. Try soups, vegetables in khichdi and dals.

My sister has an autistic kid. He is 6 years old. He likes biscuits and cakes. Unfortunately, it was told that he shouldn't eat anything with maida, wheat and gluten. The other problem is, even if we give him a biscuit, he won't stop with one. Just wanted to know if there an alternative biscuit kind snacks available/ anything my sister can prepare on her own.

Priya Kathpal Jan 6, 2018

@Vijaya ramakrishnan

She can replace wheat with other gluten free cereals like oats, rice, maize flour etc and bake cookies or biscuit kind snacks from them.

My son is 5 years old, he started liking Kiwi fruit, and he eats atleast 3 kiwis a day or sometime more. I know Vitamin C is good, will it be too much for him?

Priya Kathpal Jan 6, 2018

@Vijaya ramakrishnan

Its absolutely ok to have 3 kiwis. But I would offer variety and encourage other fruit consumption for the only reason that kiwi alone cannot give everything. Also fruits are low on calorie so if he eats too much of it, concentrated energy foods may get replaced. Keep a balance and stick to 2 fruits per day.

Hi Priya, My son is 2.5 yrs old. He eats well and likes egg. However whenever I give him egg, he seems to have a tummy upset. Though initially I ignored,later I realized he may have be allergic to egg. Is it possible? If so, what food substitute could I give if I could avoid egg?

Priya Kathpal Jan 6, 2018

@Navyz

Have you tried giving him only egg yolk or white. Try giving separately and observe if one of it is an issue. Also try and give boiled eggs or egg made in less fat. To replace eggs you can up on dairy products like curds, yogurt, cottage cheese.

Navyz Jan 6, 2018

Hi Priya, I am a breast feeding mom, I am on calcium supplements and was instructed to continue till I feed my baby. What food could you recommend so that I can avoid these calcium tablets? I do take milk and egg but not very frequently. Any other food which would be helpful to know my iron/calcium level good as a new mother?

Priya Kathpal Jan 6, 2018

@Navyz

Hi, first 6 months are exclusive breastfeeding and thats why supplements become important. Post that you can slowly wean yourself off from the supplements provided you consume balanced meals. Make sure you get enough Vitamin D, try and be active. Add low fat dairy like curds and cottage cheese too.

Whenever my daughter takes orange or banana she gets cold. I want to stop giving the vitamin syrup

Priya Kathpal Jan 6, 2018

@Vijaya ramakrishnan

How old is your daughter?? Ideally vitamin syrup is not needed unless there is a deficiency. Its totally ok to not give orange and banana if you feel they are troubling (though there is no evidence they can cause cold, banana can sometimes aggravate the symptoms) There are many fruits that can take care of various nutrients needed by your child.

She is 2 now.
