Fasting or Feasting - Navratri and Millets!

Come Navratri and everyone in our house is soaked in the mesmerizing feeling of spirituality – morning & evening pujas, diyas, 9 days of no non-veg, no egg principle, and whatnot.

Though these 9 days are ‘No-grain’ days i.e., people fast from grains, eat simple food, and remember Goddess Durga in their prayers asking her blessings to guard against evils of greed, anger, jealousy, etc.

But it’s a well-known principle, when you are restricted from doing something, your inner creativity comes to the surface; remember those school days? So, when there is a restriction on eating grains, how and when the creativity in the kitchen changes from fasting to feasting is a well-known secret.

Since childhood, I have seen my mom prepare loads of sweet and savory dishes during these 9 days – coconut ladoos, bottle guard burfi, buckwheat puris, sama rice dosa with potato and paneer, sweet and sour pumpkin (oh, I am drooling....  ), which we don’t get the privilege to taste during other 356 days.

You talk to her about these feasts, and she will have all her stories of why consuming these millets is essential – the amount of minerals these little powerhouses of nutrition store within and how consuming them for a few days a year is good for your mind, body, and soul.

But good or bad – I know from my tongue to my intestine, no one has ever thanked Navratri that much 😊
