Diwali Safety 101

Dos

  • Always buy firecrackers from a licensed seller and store them safely, away from flammable objects.
  • While bursting crackers, wear comfortable, well-fitted cotton clothes and closed footwear.
  • Encourage your child to use long sparklers and long incense sticks.
  • Discard spent fireworks in a bucket of sand or water. Remnants, such as sparklers that are still hot, and other sharp objects, can cause accidents if left lying around.
  • Keep silver sulfa cream to apply in case of minor burns.
  • Keep a first-aid box containing cotton and saline to clean wounds in case of accidental burns.
  • Ensure that you properly dispose of fireworks that do not light up or burst.
  • Make sure you have access to your local doctor in an emergency.
  • In case of eye irritation or injury, wash the eye immediately with plenty of plain water. Use approved lubricating eye drops. Contact your doctor for further treatment, or go to the hospital.
  • Wash your hands with plain soap and water immediately after bursting crackers. Change your clothes once inside the house.

Donts

  • Don't leave your child unattended with the crackers and fireworks.
  • Don't use sanitizers before lighting crackers, as sanitizers are inflammable.
  • Don't allow your child to experiment with fireworks.
  • Don't burst crackers near electric poles, wires, or electric boxes. Ensure you are in an open space with no obstruction overhead (like wires or trees) while lighting crackers.
  • Don't keep your face too close to any firework.
  • Don't keep matchsticks or lit candles near unused crackers.
  • Don't wear nylon clothes while handling fireworks.
  • Don't wear loose, flowy clothes and dupattas while bursting crackers
  • Don't stay out for too long, bursting crackers or watching fireworks.
  • The noise and smoke may be harmful to you and your child.
  • Don't burst crackers or fireworks using open flame.
