Why do some hairbands hurt kids? How to choose one that doesn't (from Team Choko)
From Team Choko, a brand making handmade hair accessories:
A girls hairband that pinches behind the ears is the main reason kids pull them off. Here's what to look for:
- Gentle tension. Before buying, flex the hair band open. It should open easily and close softly.
- Padded or wrapped band. Fabric, satin or velvet spreads the pressure better than bare plastic or metal.
- Rounded ends that sit behind the ears, not on the ear bone itself.
- Weight under control. Big embellishments add pressure. Save heavy ones for short events.
- Stretch it gently at home. Leave a new hair band over a book a little wider than her head for a day to ease the tension.
- Take breaks. For long functions, switch between the hair band and clips.
If she complains about headaches, try a narrower band or switch to clips, and watch for any marks.
