Humility And Gandhian Philosophy

Dr Alok Bajpai
Psychiatrist, IIT Kanpur

Today, my life and practices are the exact reflections of what my parents taught me - honesty, discipline, humility, tolerance, and Gandhian philosophy. Growing up, my dad, being a very simple man himself, encouraged us to refrain from pomp and show. He believed in simple and efficient living, rather than a luxurious and indulgent one. My parents and grandparents also taught me that learning never ceases. They encouraged me to keep exploring different fields, beats, and educational genres. My interest in psychiatry also started from observing my parents interact with others. Their vast knowledge encouraged me to be inquisitive and curious about everything I came across. What impressed me the most was that, though my parents weren't affluent, they commanded a lot of respect and were held in awe by everyone. Today, if I can juggle psychiatry, literature, arts, and movies and conduct classes and workshops, it is only because of my parents.

As far as my own parenting goes, I practically mirror their parenting style.
