How to strike a balance with screen time, sweets/chocolates, and toys?

    Dear Parent,

It really is a challenge most parents face. However, once the child knows what the rules are for those items in the family, it becomes much easier to navigate tricky situations.

    • Start by having 2-3 simple family rules, e.g., screen time not more than 30 minutes every day after lunch, sweets/chocolates not more than once a week, and a new toy only once a month. Also decide on the consequences for breaking those rules. For example, if the child exceeds his 30 minute limit by 5 or 10 minutes, that time gets deducted from her screen time the next day.
    • Ensure that you involve your child at each step of deciding these rules, even if you feel your child is too young to understand them. Even if you have these rules in place, your child might still want to defy them - she might still throw tantrums when she doesn’t get her way. But having rules is paramount to the child feeling safe and secure. And having firm limits is important in teaching your child that she can’t get away with what she wants.
