All about Chandrayaan 3: Facts for kids on ISRO's successful moon mission

It is a joyous occasion and a matter of pride for Indians across the globe. The nation's third lunar mission, Chandrayaan 3, which had a successful lift-off from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh, on July 14, 2023, in a mission to understand the Moon, successfully landed on the lunar surface on August 23 at 6:04 p.m.

This historic landing makes India the fourth country to have landed on the Moon after the United States of America, China, and the Soviet Union (Russia).

Let's take a look at some key points of the mission

The primary objective of this lunar mission spearheaded by the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) was to study the geology, surface composition, and environment of the natural satellite. This included identifying potential resources for future missions, studying the surface's mineralogy and elemental abundance, conducting high-resolution remote sensing of the Moon, and gaining a better understanding of the Moon's evolution.

“The main lacuna in the last Chandrayaan-2 mission was that there were off-nominal conditions that were initiated in the system. Everything was not nominal. And the craft was not able to handle the off-nominal condition for a safe landing," ISRO Chief S Somnath said in an interview.

Chandrayaan 3 is ISRO’s third lunar exploration mission. The moon lander, Vikram was placed on a GSLV Mark 3 heavy-lift launch vehicle, nicknamed the ‘Bahubali rocket’. It consisted of a lander and a rover similar to Chandrayaan 2, but not an orbiter. ISRO had maintained that learning from the last moon mission, it reduced the number of engines on the lander from five to four and updated the software.
