I had the same problem with my kid ..... slowly and steadily I tweaked the whole concept of serious school work as a fun play bonding thing depending upon how your schoolgoer reacts and responds...try doing that with your kid..just see what concept was taught in school, revise the concept with your kid without opening books and then take that fun tone to books...I know it sounds funny but it works though requires a lot of patience.
