my experience cooking with Millets!

Back in the day when there was no internet and so no sharing of recipe through Facebook and Whatsapp, still knowingly or unknowingly our ancestors were using many kinds of millets those are good for our health in one or the other recipes.

My grandmother was frequently using  Ragi (Finger millet).This is mostly used in southern part of India specially in Karnataka in different forms.

Infants first hard food here starts with Ragi Manni ( Ragi cereal ) that is  prepared  by sprouts of Ragi and wheat ,which has to be fried and then get its flour. 

She  was preparing very tasty ladoos using Ragi Huri Hittu with ghee and jiggery .

I also gave this to my kids they are really enjoying it. Kids these days are extremely choosy and they want attractive food but due to its color they might not love Ragi. I add choco-chips and sprinklers to make it appealing!

While preparing it at home is the best option, I use the following ready-made pack for emergencies. Loads of recipes can be cooked with it!


Ragi has multiple benefits like:

  • High protein
  • Natural weight loss
  • Prevents skin from ageing 
  • Ragi is good for hair health👱🏻‍♀️
  • Loads of calcium 💪🏻
  • Increases production of mother milk

Apart from these fantastic dishes, I also use Raw Ragi Flour to cook dosas, roti, idli and upma, which adds a special touch to the food.

During Summer🌞, Ragi Flour mixed with water and cooked well can be preserved to consume with milk/buttermilk for cooling agent.

Could relate your love for granny also.Nice to recollect all these things. 

Even I remember an argument with my father.He was feeding the 🐔 with kambu and I too joined him.He gave me the same to eat.I was annoyed and asked him how he can give the same to me also.Then he tried explaining me the benefits of kambu.But I was worried about how 🐔 and I  can eat the same.Then much much ....... later realised things.😅

How to prepare Ragi Huri Hittu:

  •  Wash Ragi properly and let it dry well
  • Fry it on low flame till it pops
  • Add elaichi for added flavour and obtain the flour
  • Ragi Huri Hittu is ready to use and preserve.
