Q.You won Masterchef India, one of the toughest culinary competitions, when you were going through a difficult time personally. What was on your mind then?

I was going through a lot of turmoil in my personal life but I knew I had to stay focused and give my best in my chosen field. Cooking is a passion for me and I knew this was my golden chance.

Q.How did you prepare for the competition?

I believe it is my love for food and the passion for cooking that helped me win the competition. Frankly, before and during the competition, I was not fully prepared. I just decided to take the plunge and perform to the best of my capacity.

    Q. What, according to you, are the challenges of being a single mom?

For all single moms like me, to work and take care of children at the same time and, do justice to both, is a big challenge.

    Q. You travel a lot, you have written cookbooks, and manage other work-related activities. How do you maintain a work-life balance?

Time management and discipline are essential in both the professional and personal lives and important, for work-life balance. But doing that is not always easy.

    Q. Tell us about your love for food and how it has helped you in your life?

I smell, breathe and live food! It gives me life and excitement! Being passionate about something and having that as your career makes it more fun. The rest follows as you put your heart and soul into everything that you do.

    Q. You defied stereotypes to live life on your own terms. How difficult was it and how did it affect your children?

Yes, I admit that it's been a difficult phase for me. Whenever a family breaks up, it is the children who are the most affected. But parents should inspire children not to give up but maintain a positive outlook on life.

    Q. Can you give us some quick and effective cooking tips so that busy moms get to spend less time in the kitchen?

    • Keep veggies chopped and use fresh, not frozen
    • Puree tomatoes beforehand and freeze, so you can use them as and when required. This saves time
    • If onions and garlic are chopped and sauteed before cooking, it speeds up the process, especially when you're in a rush
    • Ensure you have homemade sauces and dips always ready
    • Curd, eggs, bread and butter, and fruits should always be stored in the fridge, so you don't need to rush out to do last-minute shopping!

    Q. What are the values you want your children to grow up with?

Honesty and sincerity are the two values I want my children to grow up with, as I feel these are important virtues that will help them throughout their lives.

    Q. What is your advice to youngsters who want to make a career out of cooking?

Education, discipline, and balance in your personal and professional life are key to success. Of course, if you love food, it will find a way into your life. Today, any work in the field of food is not just restricted to cooking. You can blog about food, open your own cafeteria, pursue food photography, set up organic farming, etc.

    Q. Can you give us a simple recipe that kids can make?

Here is a simple yet tasty dish

    Ingredients:

    • 1 cup flour
    • 1 egg
