Want to boost your immune system? These effective home remedies will help improve your family's immunity

The Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) recently issued guidelines for discharge care for people recovering from COVID-19. These guidelines include recommendations for holistic care such as drinking warm water and practicing mild exercises like taking walks, yoga and breathing exercises. The document also advises recovering patients to follow a balanced nutritious diet, take adequate rest and avoid certain health vices such as smoking and the consumption of alcohol.

Apart from these guidelines, the MoHFW has also released a list of home remedies that will aid in boosting immunity and speeding the recovery of those affected. Also, these remedies can greatly improve the health of the entire family.

Here is a detailed list of these remedies that can be easily sourced and prepared at home:

1. Ayush kwath

Ayush kwath is a herbal formulation made of Tulsi, cinnamon, dry ginger and black pepper. This age-old Ayurvedic recipe is believed to be effective in boosting immunity and improving strength and wellness. It can easily be prepared at home. Take all the ingredients in equal measure, grind them to a coarse powder and store them in an airtight container. To make the drink, boil 3gms of the powder with 150ml of water. You can add lemon juice, honey, or jaggery to suit your taste. This drink can then be consumed like tea or a hot beverage every day. The MoHFW guidelines recommend the consumption of 1 cup or 150ml of Ayush kwath every day.

2. Samshamani Vati

Samshamani Vati is another among the MoHFW recommendations. Samshamani Vati is an Ayurvedic medicine that is used in the treatment of fevers. Prepared from the bark of the Giloy creeper, it has antipyretic and anti-inflammatory properties, which are said to strengthen the body's immune response. The guideline recommends the consumption of 1gm of Samshamani Vati every day. Samshamani Vati is easily available in Ayurvedic stores.

3. Giloy powder

One of the most important herbs in Ayurveda, Indian tinospora or Giloy, as it is commonly known, is useful in the treatment of a variety of diseases. With its strong antipyretic properties, Giloy is useful in the treatment of fevers. It boosts immunity and also can help increase blood platelet count. Giloy can be very helpful for patients recovering from COVID-19. The MoHFW recommends the consumption of 1-3gm of Giloy powder mixed in lukewarm water every day for 15 days.

4. Ashwagandha

Ashwagandha is an Ayurvedic herb that provides a host of benefits to the body, the most important among them being its ability to help the body manage stress. It is also known to boost brain function, lower blood sugar, reduce inflammation and help fight signs of anxiety and depression. The host of benefits it provides makes ashwagandha an important supplement for patients recovering from COVID-19. The ministry guidelines advise patients to take 1-3gm of ashwagandha powder twice daily for 15 days.

5. Amla fruit or powder

An excellent source of Vitamin C, Amla is known to boost immunity, metabolism and is beneficial against viral and bacterial infections, including cold and cough. Amla is also rich in a range of polyphenols (micronutrients that we get through certain plant-based foods) that are known to fight against the development of cancer cells. It also strengthens the respiratory system and provides relief from chest congestion, which is very important in the recovery of COVID-19. The MoHFW recommends consuming one amla fruit or 1-3gm of amla powder daily.

6. Mulethi powder

An age-old home remedy for cold and cough, mulethi or licorice has a host of health benefits. It is packed with antibacterial and antiviral compounds that help keep away infections. It can also help heal chest congestion, thin mucous and improve breathing. Its anti-inflammatory properties help heal a sore throat. All these health benefits make mulethi very beneficial in the recovery from COVID-19. The health ministry recommends mulethi for patients who are suffering from dry cough. The recommended dosage is 1-3gm of mulethi powder mixed in lukewarm water, twice every day.

7. Turmeric milk

There must have been a reason our grandmothers made us drink turmeric milk as a remedy for almost all ailments. Yes, in fact, there are many. Turmeric has strong antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties and is powerful when it comes to curing wounds, strengthening immunity and quickening internal healing. The chemical compound, curcumin, is what gives turmeric most of its health benefits and having turmeric with milk improves the absorption of curcumin by the body. The health ministry guidelines recommend drinking warm milk with half a teaspoon of turmeric every morning and night.

8. Gargling with turmeric and salt

A sore throat is one of the symptoms of COVID-19 and most patients recovering from the illness have to find ways to alleviate the discomfort caused by it. Gargling with warm water mixed with salt and turmeric is an easy and effective way to do this. Turmeric is beneficial for relieving inflammation and swelling, while salt works to wash away bacteria and provide relief from the pain and burning sensation.

9. Chyawanprash

Chyawanprash is an Ayurvedic formulation made from around 50 medicinal herbs and their extracts, with Amla as the prime ingredient. This antioxidant-rich health supplement is an age-old remedy for boosting immunity and treating a range of infections such as cold and cough. The health ministry recommends taking 1tsp or 5mg of Chyawanprash daily in the morning.

So, there you have it. A list of easy home remedies that can aid in regaining your health post-COVID-19 recovery and improving immunity. While these are recommendations for a holistic approach to recovery, the MoHFW guidelines underscore the fact that these are not meant to be used as preventive or curative therapy. If you have symptoms, please consult a doctor immediately.
