5 Diwali Party Snacks Within 10 Minutes

Celebrations become twice as exciting and heart-warming when you have friends and family around you, and of course, a lot of lip-smacking food! It is no different during Diwali. We love distributing sweets in beautifully decorated platters and look forward to serving mouth-watering fare to our loved ones.

Food is an integral part of a festival get-together. Of course, you can always get your party food home-delivered, however, it is nicer to add a personal touch to the celebrations. So, if you have the time, do cook up a delicious meal for family and friends.

Here are some simple, quick recipes you can try for your next get-together. And then, sit back and relax while your guests (both adults and children) finish these yummy snacks in a jiffy!

1. Nachos chaat with veggies and sprouts

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup boiled sweet corn
  • 2 tbsp thick curd
  • 2 carrots, grated
  • 1 potato, boiled, peeled and cut into small pieces
  • 1 onion chopped
  • 1/2 capsicum diced
  • 1 tsp chaat masala
  • 1 tbsp tomato ketchup
  • 1 tsp coriander finely chopped
  • 1 packet nachos chips

Method

  • Put all the ingredients, except the nachos chips, into a bowl.
  • Mix the ingredients and combine well.
  • In a serving bowl or plate, line up 7-8 nachos.
  • Scoop up the mixture from the mixing bowl.
  • Put it over all the nachos.
  • Your nachos chaat is ready to serve.

2. Mini Idli Chaat

Ingredients

  • 8-10 medium-sized idlis
  • 1 medium-sized onion
  • 1 tsp chaat masala 
  • 2-3 medium-sized potatoes (boiled, peeled and cut into bite-sized pieces)
  • 2 small tomatoes
  • 1 teaspoon red chilli powder
  • 2/3 cup yoghurt (curd)
  • 2 tbsp refined oil
  • A handful of finely chopped coriander leaves
  • 2 tsp namkeen or bhujiya
  • Salt to taste

Method

  • You can make the idlis in advance to save time.
  • In a kadai, put oil and lightly fry the idlis till light golden brown. Keep aside.
  • Then fry the potato pieces till golden in colour.
  • Now, arrange the chaat in a large mixing bowl. Put in the fried idlis, potatoes.
  • Add diced onions, salt, diced tomatoes, curd. Mix all the ingredients well.
  • Sprinkle the chaat masala.
  • Serve your idli chaat in individual plates.
  • Check the salt, and if needed, add more.
  • Garnish with coriander and bhujiya. 

3. Paneer Pakode

Ingredients

  • 250g paneer
  • 4-5 tbsp gram flour (besan)
  • 1-2 tsp chiroti rava (Bombay rava)
  • 1 tsp red chilli powder
  • 1 tsp cumin powder

Method

  • Cut the paneer into long strips, don't make it too thick or too thin.
  • Make a batter of gram flour, rava, salt, red chilly powder and cumin powder.
  • Don't make the batter too runny or too thick. It must be similar to dosa batter consistency.
  • Dip the paneer pieces into the batter.
  • Deep fry (or shallow fry, in a non-stick tava) the paneer pieces just before serving.
  • You can also make the batter in advance and refrigerate for future use.
  • Garnish with coriander leaves.

4. Soya and sprouts vada

Ingredients

  • 1 cup green moong (soaked for 4 hours and ground to a paste)
  • 250g soya chunks (soaked in hot water for half an hour)
  • Salt to taste
  • 1 onion diced
  • Half an inch of ginger finely sliced
  • 1-2 tsp red chilly powder
  • 1 tsp of cumin powder
  • A few curry leaves
  • Oil for frying

Method

  • Chop the soya chunks finely or grind coarsely.
  • Lightly fry the soya chunks with salt and cumin powder.
  • Put the soya chunks in the green moong paste.
  • Add diced onions, curry leaves and ginger pieces.
  • Mix all the ingredients together, check the salt.
  • In a kadai, heat oil for frying.
  • Now, fry the vadas till golden brown.
  • Serve hot.

5. Bread pizza

Ingredients

  • 10-12 bread pieces
  • Mozzarella cheese shredded
  • 2-3 tbsp tomato ketchup
  • 1 tsp dried oregano
  • 2-3 tbsp pizza sauce
  • A few black olives
  • 2 carrots and one capsicum cut into small pieces

Method

  • Cut off the sides of the bread slices.
  • Apply a little bit of pizza sauce and tomato ketchup on each slice.
  • Arrange the carrots and capsicum on top of the bread slices (you can lightly stir fry the vegetables first if you want to).
  • Cover with generous amounts of shredded cheese.
  • Sprinkle dried oregano on top.
  • If you have an oven, preheat for 10 minutes
  • Bake the bread pizza slices for 5-7 minutes at 180 degrees Celsius.
  • You can do this in a conventional tawa too; drizzle some butter and toast the bread slices.
  • Cover and toast or bake for 3-4 minutes or till the cheese melts.
  • Serve hot.

What's a party without food, fun and some fantastic conversation? But this Diwali, do make it a point to eat and serve healthy. Also, note that most of these snack items will be a big hit among children. So, why not add some mocktails of your own making and well, see your guests glow!
