When there is a head injury during child playing, can we ignore or take the child to the doctor for checking the impact of an injury?

    Dear Parent,

Injuries while playing are common in children. However, when it comes to a head injury you must be alert. Children knock themselves on the head many times and the pain disappears after a gentle rub or applying a cold compress.

Do not ignore a child’s head injury when:

    • There is excessive bleeding from an open wound
    • Swelling lasts for more than a day or two and the area is tender and painful
    • The child faints or becomes unconscious (even for a few minutes) after the injury
    • The child is confused and disoriented (not aware of what is going on around them)

You must take your child to the doctor immediately. Apart from treating a wound, the doctor will ask you to keep the child under observation for 24 hours as there could be delayed reactions and symptoms.
