Neurologists or brain doctors specialise in diagnosing and treating neurological disorders and brain diseases. They are trained in identifying and pinpointing the exact location of any brain disorder, central nervous system disease and spinal cord problem. A neurology doctor tries to treat neurological conditions through medication, rehabilitation and physical therapy.
A visit to the neurologist or brain specialist is necessary for the treatment of brain disorders, cerebrovascular diseases, spinal cord problems and central nervous system diseases. If your doctor suspects a neurological disorder, he may refer you to a neuro doctor or neuro specialist for the proper diagnosis and treatment of the condition. Neurological diseases can cause a lot of complications such as mood swings or emotional outbursts. Therefore, it is important to keep the appointment with the neurology physician.
Cerebral palsy, brain aneurysm, epilepsy, Parkinson's disease are some common brain disorders treated by a neurologist. Also, frequent headaches, peripheral neuropathy, transverse myelitis, arteriovenous malformation, ischemic stroke, vision loss, loss of balance, ischemic stroke and demyelinating disease like multiple sclerosis require treatment by the nerve doctor. In fact, there are more than 600 neurological disorders.
Frequent headaches with light sensitivity, light-headedness or dizziness, frequent tremors, blackouts, vision loss, loss of balance, loss of grip strength, back pain resulting from nerve compression and spinal cord problems are some of the typical issues that should prompt you to consult a neurophysician. Ignoring these symptoms can cause numerous adverse physical and emotional complications later in life.
Usually, after doing a thorough examination, your family physician or a general practitioner would refer you to a neurologist if the results arouse suspicion. However, in case of emergency, you can consult the neurology doctor without waiting for a referral.
Both the nerve doctor and neurosurgeon treat disorders of the nervous system, but neurologists are not trained to perform surgical procedures. Neurosurgeons, on the other hand, are trained to perform both surgical and nonsurgical treatments. Some of the procedures that neurosurgeons perform are surgery for brain tumour, arteriovenous malformation (AVM), spinal cord tumour and carpal tunnel surgery.
A neurological examination is performed by the neurophysician to diagnose brain disorders like brain tumour or Parkinson's disease, cerebrovascular diseases like arteriovenous malformation or stroke, memory disorders, vision loss, and loss of balance and grip strength. The examination follows a certain structure. It begins with a discussion between the neurologist and the patient. This is followed by a physical examination. Based on these two, the neurologist may order various tests.
A neurophysician treats many types of brain disorders which affect not only the brain but also the entire body. Some of these are cerebral palsy, epilepsy, Parkinson's disease, brain aneurysm, brain tumour, memory loss and frequent headaches. Brain disorders can affect anyone, irrespective of gender or age.
Brain tumours are of two types: primary brain tumour and secondary brain tumour. In the case of secondary brain tumours, the cancer has spread from other parts of the body like the lungs, breast and kidney to the brain. Early symptoms of brain tumour include light-headedness, memory loss, loss of balance and grip strength, and frequent headaches. It is important to know that brain tumours can be either benign or cancerous.
Brain tumours are treated based on their location, size, type and health of the patient. The most common form of treatment is surgery, which is usually followed by radiation and chemotherapy. Then the patient is made to undergo physical therapy, occupational therapy and speech therapy for complete recovery.
The bulging of a blood vessel in the brain is called a brain aneurysm. A ruptured brain aneurysm requires emergency surgery as internal bleeding can prove fatal to the patient. However, depending on symptoms, a neurologist may treat a brain aneurysm with medication.
Symptoms of brain aneurysms vary: Unruptured aneurysms usually cause symptoms like pain above and behind one eye, blurred or double vision, difficulty speaking, and weakness and numbness on one side of the face. Symptoms of unruptured brain aneurysms are stiffness in the neck, loss of balance, light sensitivity, drooping eyelids, severe headache, and nausea and vomiting.
A neurology doctor conducts a variety of tests to diagnose neurological disorders. Some of them are CT or CAT scan, MRI, Doppler ultrasound, electroencephalogram, electromyography, lumbar puncture, magnetic resonance angiogram or MRA, magnetic resonance venogram or MRV, myelogram, nerve conduction study and positron emission tomography.
Some cerebrovascular diseases treated by a nerve doctor include arteriovenous malformation, brain aneurysm, stroke, carotid stenosis and Moyamoya disease.
Most headaches go away on their own or can be treated by the family doctor or general practitioner. But, in case the treatment prescribed for frequent headaches does not work and there are symptoms like vision loss, confusion or stiff neck, you should see the neurology doctor. When should I take my child to a paediatric neurologist? If your child suffers from frequent headaches, seizures, muscle weakness, speech delay, or has suffered a head injury, she may be referred to a paediatric neurologist.
