Kids getting bullied or insulted during playtime

Hi all, My 6 yr old girl is shy by nature and an introvert. When she plays amidst a group of her friends in our neighborhood, she often is bullied at or ignored.Initially, she didn't know how to communicate, but after few months she learnt how to talk and mingle with all. However ,often she is bullied and not allowed to play along with them.I am not sure if it is because she speaks less or is scared to give back. She feels left out even though she never fights and is very friendly.
I wonder if it is just because of her age, but I see many kids of her age get along themselves. Have any of you faced such situations and if so how to comfort the kid? ... more

Hi. Introverts are not necessarily shy. They can be quite self assured and assertive too. They are good friends with a selected few and enjoy spending time away from people, following their interests. You may want to give a thought to your daughter's level of confidence. Children sometimes feel they are not as good as others and this shows in their body language and interactions with peers. It's easy for others to bully such kids.

I often find my kids in conflict with friends. I think it might be due to their age,5-6 yr., Surprisingly,They forget their fights and play next time they meet.I tell them to keep away from kids who often fight or try to bully .I divert their time towards activities like painting and swiming, which they enjoy.

Thanks for sharing your tips and wonderful insights in the article. Will definitely practice.
I also wanted to mention that, the kids who bully my daughter were a few months back her close friends. I found it strange and doubt if the kids parents play a big role in moulding their kids behaviour and forcing them to change friends!

Have more play dates for her. Please coordinate with her class friends whom she is comfortable and arrange weekly twice play dates. First start with with one and you can increase the group, she will learn to negotiate , communicate, and take turns in play. This will boost her confidence.
