Why Junk Food Is Bad For Kids

What is common between a cold soda, a pizza bursting with cheese, a chocolate ice-cream and a juicy burger – they all belong to the category of junk food. Yes, junk food is unhealthy and impacts the mental development of the child.

“I started eating healthier. I actually gave up fast food. I gave up candy and potato chips and everything else. I started watching what I ate.” – Ryan Lochte

Ryan Lochte was correct when he advocated giving up fast food for a healthier life. Not only does junk food contribute to obesity in kids, but it can also damage the brain. According to an article titled, '5 Harmful Effects of Junk Food' published in in August 2017, "The more kids consume junk food, the less likely they are to get the essential nutrients that the body requires for proper growth and development."

In the article, 'What are the effects of eating junk food in kids?', published in MomJunction in 2017, writer Lakshmeez states that some harmful effects of junk food on kids include:

• Increased blood pressure – The sodium in the salt present in junk foods increases blood pressure.

• Fatigue – Junk foods have zero carbohydrates and protein, which give energy. As a result, kids become tired.

• Less emotional quotient – A diet rich in nutrition is essential to maintain a healthy, hormonal balance. Junk food has zero nutrition.

• Obesity – The fat used for flavouring and seasoning in junk foods that kids find tasty, results in obesity.

Fast food may seem convenient and tasty but it has many negative benefits. Parents should remember that junk food deprives a kid of a healthy meal and take steps to limit it.
