Very Very Special Laxman

“Have a little faith in your sons. This journey will be the making of them.” ― C J Milbrandt, On Your Marks: The Adventure Begins

VVS Laxman, one of the ‘Fab Four of Indian Cricket’, is a rare sportsman who packs power with finesse. His second innings in the second test of the Border—Gavaskar Trophy, 2001, in which he scored 281 against Australia at Kolkata, is the only innings by an Indian player to be listed among Wisden’s Top 10 batting performances. One of the all-time cricketing legends Rahul Dravid has this to say about VVS Laxman’s historic innings: "I enjoyed it from the other end. It was like watching a highlights package."

There is some solid parenting behind this champion sportsman, and we can take away a lesson or two from his life. “Right from my childhood, I have always been inspired by my parents. Their passion towards their profession and how they have handled success and failure in their lives was something to learn from,” says Laxman in an interview to indiatimes.com. Parents are huge inspirations to their children and play a major role in shaping their personality.

In the 1990s, when cricket was a very amateur sport, Laxman’s parents believed in their son and courageously let him choose cricket as his profession. Our children too have special talents. All we need to do is to identify their talents and encourage them rather than forcing our dreams onto them.
