Complementary and Alternative Medicine, commonly abbreviated as CAM, can be defined as a group of widely varied medical and health care systems, practices and products that are not presently considered to be part of conventional medicine. In the event of normal medications not taking effect, especially in the cases of chronic health condition or serious illness, many parents might consider resorting to CAM approaches for their children.

According to an article in Time, “The most commonly used CAM therapies included massage, faith healing, chiropractic and aromatherapy, while the most popular products to treat conditions ranging from cancer to asthma and inflammatory bowel disease were vitamins and minerals, herbal remedies and homeopathic medicines.”

However, adopting these alternative treatments, there are some important things to think about. Sometimes, CAM is used in interaction with conventional medical care (Ex: using Māori herbal medicine and massage for a child with cerebral palsy as well as physiotherapy and anti-spasticity medication), and sometimes, in place of the conventional medicines (Ex: giving diet and herbal remedies to a child with a diagnosis of cancer instead of using recognised cancer treatments). It is necessary to know when and how to use the CAM, so it is better to consult your paediatrician first.

The interest in CAM is increasing and more and more parents are adopting to this mode of treatment. However, its effect remains controversial among many medical professionals. To learn about the various researches conducted with regards to this, flip through our ClipBook.
