Summer brings with it plenty of free time for children to play but also hot and humid days that can pose a threat to the health of children. Exposure to high temperature, combined with physical activity can lead to exhaustion resulting in heat stroke in children.
According to an article titled Protecting Your Child From Dehydration and Heat Illness published in WebMD, both heat exhaustion and heat stroke require immediate care. Heat stroke is a medical emergency that, when not taken proper care of, can be deadly.
Heat stroke occurs when we become too dehydrated to perspire and our bodies heat up because we can’t sweat, says everydayhealth. Symptoms of heat stroke in children include headache, feelings of dizziness, tiredness, incidents of seizure and so on. So, how do you prevent heat stroke in children? In part, by preventing dehydration. Parents should ensure that the children are regularly taking breaks and drinking plenty of fluids.
“Water is usually good enough, and the occasional electrolyte solution, like Gatorade, is not a bad idea,” says Ken Haller, MD, an associate professor of pediatrics at Saint Louis University School of Medicine.
