Slow Learners

ParentCircle

Does your child take more time to understand and grasp concepts than what is considered normal? Do you spend frustrating hours labouring to make her pick up speed in studying? All you need to do is understand the problems faced by slow learners and take the necessary steps to help her rather than worry.

Slow learning cannot always be counted among learning disabilities, although the line of differentiation may be very thin. The main issue with slow learners is that they need more time to grasp the concepts. But by applying correct teaching techniques, teachers and parents can make slow learners increase their speed of learning. They can be motivated by offering several tips on how to be a good student despite the challenges.

As The New Times, a leading English daily based in Rwanda states in an article, “In order to grasp new concepts, a slow learner needs more time, more repetition, and often more resources from teachers to be successful. Reasoning skills are typically delayed, which makes new concepts difficult to learn.”

An attitudinal shift on the part of parents as well as teachers can go a long way in helping slow learners. It is important to remember that they need to be supported and not chided for their difficulties with learning. Taking necessary remedial measures like enrolling them in good coaching classes and providing sufficient practice in subjects they find tough to grasp can help them in a big way. The time taken for them to learn may be higher, but slow learners can also become good students.
