An article published in The Hindu, about the weight of school bags, states the guidelines that need to be followed by all schools in the country. “As per the guidelines, the school bag should not weigh more than 2 kg for students in classes 1 and 2, less than 3 kg for classes 3 and 4. Students between classes 5 and 8 should not carry bags that are more than 4 kg. The upper limit for classes 9 to 12 is set at 6 kg.”

Adverse effects of carrying heavy bags might include permanent stoop, poor lung functioning, breathing difficulties and even spinal impairment.
