Listening Skills

ParentCircle

“If speaking is silver, then listening is gold”, so goes a famous Turkish saying. It emphasises on the importance of listening in the communication process.

Humans are social beings and communication is an essential part of our lives. An effective communication not only depends on clear speech, but also on how well the message is understood. However, to understand what is being said, an individual needs to learn to listen. Therefore, listening is one of most essential life skills that an individual should develop in order to improve his personal and professional life.

But not all of us are good listeners. In fact, most of us have poor listening and understanding skills. An article, 'Active listening', by Mind Tools, states, "Our personal filters, assumptions, judgments, and beliefs can distort what we hear. As a listener, your role is to understand what is being said. This may require you to reflect what is being said and ask questions."

If you want to help your child improve his communication skills, then you should encourage him to not only listen but also reflect on what is said. So, start observing how your child listens and responds to others, and then come up with a plan to help improve his listening skills. It is always better to start the process as early as possible, as it is easy for a child to learn a new habit.

This ClipBook will help you get an idea about some simple and fun-filled ways to enhance your child’s listening.
