Job Description: Mom

Divya Kumar

Rudyard Kipling once said, “God could not be everywhere, and, therefore, he made mothers.” Being a mother is one of the hardest jobs on earth, but it is also the most pleasurable and rewarding; the rewards are not in the form of cash, but in the form of smiles, hugs and laughter. A mother embodies patience, love, warmth and care.

If one has to add a job description to the role of a mother, it will be an endless list! She is a multi-tasker, problem solver, and knows you better than anyone else in the world. But sometimes, playing the role of a mother can become overwhelming. You might feel that your identity and sense of self is getting diluted due to the pressures of fulfilling the societal expectations. You will often be bombarded with unwanted advice and suggestions; people can be judgmental of your parenting skills despite you doing the best for your child. Facing these unending challenges and demands can make you feel depressed.

To overcome such situations, you should always find some time for yourself and indulge in something you enjoy like reading a book, pursuing a hobby, taking time off with friends, catching up on some shopping or planning a romantic date with your spouse. We all need some time off from ‘mommy time’ and you should take that well-deserved break to return feeling exhilarated.

Why I’M Not The Best-Dressed Mom In Town

As the mother of a small child, dressing up often takes a backseat I recently had a morning appointment for which I made a bit of effort to dress up. My daughter informed me that I was ‘pretty’. It was one of those times when it really hit home ho...

Ten Minutes In The Life Of A Doll

My 10 minutes of suspended animation turned out to be the best thing I’d done all day. I’ve always wondered what it felt like to be one of my daughter’s favourite dolls. Contrary to what I’d assumed, it wasn’t a bad life at all.

A Space Of My Own

Way, way back in my pre-parenting life, I was very particular about my personal space. I didn’t like being crowded. Hated people peering over my shoulder when I was reading. Fast forward three years, and all I have to say to my former self is: ‘Ha...

When Mom Is Sick

I was recently down with one of these seasonal illnesses — aching sinuses, itchy throat, hacking cough — which ultimately ended with me completely losing my voice. Now, if you’ve never had the joy of developing laryngitis while caring for a toddle...
