Is Inclusive Education The Answer?

Inclusive education includes and welcomes all the students, normal and the specially-abled children in age-appropriate, regular classes and supports learning, contribution and participation in all aspects of school life.

The advantages of inclusive education are that it is indiscriminative in nature and lets a specially-abled child have the experience of the real-world. Normal children and specially-abled children can learn from each other,which in turn helps the specially-abled children develop socially, and get an equal access to quality education. In inclusive education, specially-abled children are not differently treated and that motivates them. Albert Einstein had a learning disability and yet managed to become the greatest of all the minds of the 20th century.

Some of the disadvantages of inclusive education include inability to meet an individual’s specific needs, lack of training to all the teachers to teach the specially-abled children, disruptive classes, bullying, impatience of teachers, the long time taken by specially-abled children to grasp things.

“Our children benefit greatly from social inclusion, a need for routine, age-appropriate expectations, and peer groups! While, most schools believe they are doing the best they can, the reality is completely different,” voices Mrs Deepa Garwa in her article ‘Is Inclusive Education the Answer’ which she published in her blog ‘The Two Minute Parenting.’
