How To Set Family Rules For Children

Establishing family rules are important for the smooth functioning of a family. It is the norm that parents set family rules and regulations and children often break them. But as a parent, you will need to keep reinforcing the rules and ensuring that everyone is following them.

But why do we need to establish family rules how can we do it?

Family dos and don’ts are necessary for keeping children safe and teaching them discipline and life values. According to Neil Gaiman, The Sandman: Book of Dreams — “Rules and responsibilities: these are the ties that bind us. We do what we do, because of who we are.” says, “Household rules let everyone in the family know how to behave. They help family members achieve a balance between getting what they want and respecting the needs of others.”

Setting rules involves some careful planning. As every family member’s needs are different, it is important to involve all the family members when setting the rules. Take into consideration the age of your children as well, as making teenagers follow them can sometimes be challenging. There is no real guideline available about how to set family rules, but rules can be developed for some factors like daily routine tasks, safety etc. For the sake of simplicity, and to avoid confusion, rules can be divided into dos and don’ts.
