How To Improve Fluency In English

English has now become a global language and has been adopted worldwide for both official and unofficial forms of communication. Good knowledge of English language is a great asset in today’s world and is one of the essential qualities required in a child for success.

To succeed in both academic and professional life, your children will need to be fluent in English. For children wanting to pursue their dream of studying abroad, it is necessary to have a good grasp of English language skills, both written and spoken; they would need these skills to effectively communicate in foreign countries. In fact, a good score in qualifying exams such as the IELTS and the TOEFL is a prerequisite to getting a clearance to study in countries like the UK and USA. Being articulate in English also adds to the confidence of your children and boosts their career prospects. Knowledge of English is key to success in most selection procedures such as group discussions, interviews and panel interviews. Fluency in English also greatly increases the chances of landing overseas jobs.

English has become a prerequisite for success today. To help their children learn the language, parents should know about factors that can help achieve fluency in the language and prevent it as well. To help your children improve their fluency in English, you can enrol them in organisations such as the British Council. The British Council holds classes throughout the year in spoken English, along with other classes in English language development. It would be a good idea to reach out to your nearest centre and ask them directly for the schedules or check for it on the Internet.

A dominant factor that prevents children from trying to speak in English and achieving fluency is the anxiety or fear of making mistakes. Heavy influence of mother tongue on pronunciations, dictions and sentence formation is yet another obstacle that comes in the way of fluent speaking. A study published by the BBC titled ‘Better Speaking: A guide to improving your spoken English’, states that “many learners worry that they are going to make a mistake, or that the people listening will not understand them.” All these drawbacks can be overcome with constant exposure and practice, and by adopting certain techniques.
