ParentCircle

Different forms of media are now an inseparable part of our everyday lives. As a result, our children spend a considerable amount of time using various electronic gadgets like television, video games, laptops and so on. These gadgets provide our children access to a lot of useful information and experience, but they also expose our children to media violence.

According to CNN, it is impossible to keep our children in a violence-free bubble. Caroline Knorr, parenting editor for Common Sense Media, an online resource for vetting children’s media, has shared her views in an article “Is media violence damaging to kids?” published on cnn.com. According to her, “Ninety percent of movies, 68% of video games, and 60% of TV shows show some depictions of violence.”

The Huffington Post says that, according to studies, violence on television does have adverse effects on the way children think and act.

So, how does media violence affect children? What does research say about the connection between children and the gun-heavy imagery they see on the?

Exposure to media violence makes children think that violence is the only model for resolving conflicts. Young children watching violence on television have difficulty differentiating the real from make believe. As a result, they tend to emulate or copy what they see, which sometimes leads to disastrous consequences.
