Helping Kids Create Their Own Toys

Ever wondered what use toys can be to your child? Well, apart from providing him with loads of fun, toys aid in his mental and physical development. Playing with toys boosts his creativity and improves his thinking skills. But most toys don’t come cheap and some don’t last for long. So, what do you do then? The answer lies in helping your child make some toys himself using inexpensive materials.

Children are naturally creative and can make toys out of practically anything. Making his own toys stimulates a child’s imagination, helps him in problem-solving, develops his fine motor skills, gives him a sense of accomplishment and satisfaction, and is fun too.

Your child could make puppets using cardboard, rubber gloves, socks or paper bags. Making his own board game can keep your child engaged for hours. A shoebox can turn into a doll’s house, paper straws can become an airplane, and balloons can be filled with clay and tied with wool to become smiley faces!

According to an article titled What Are the Benefits of Arts and Crafts for Children? written by Kathryn Hatter and published in, for a child, ‘The process of making her own creations and noticing other people’s creations, provides important opportunities for the appreciation of other people’s strengths and acceptance of her own abilities. A child also learns that the ability to follow directions is an integral part of the satisfaction of seeing the final result when making a craft.’
