According to a report released by the World Health Organization in 2011, the worldwide prevalence of anaemia in infants and children is estimated to be approximately 20% - 40%, which definitely represents a high percentage of the world’s population. Parents can easily identify if their child is anaemic by looking for a few identifiable signs such as fatigue, decreased performance in school, and slow cognitive and social development. Anaemia primarily affects the growth, intelligence and learning ability of children, thus impacting their overall health.
Dr Harish, our expert from Medsense, says that iron deficiency in children can be easily overcome. Unless severe, most cases of anaemia can be treated by oral administration of iron. Apart from this, foods rich in iron should be an essential part of a child’s everyday diet.
Other than children, it is also important to take care of pregnant and lactating women and give them a diet that is nutritious and rich in iron so that their haemoglobin levels stay normal and they can give birth to healthy children.
