Getting Your Baby To Sleep


Getting your baby to go to sleep – and stay asleep – can be a big challenge for new parents. Newborns sleep a lot, but not for more than two to four hours at a time. The result? A very irregular and tiring schedule for you.

American actor Ray Romano is quoted in as saying with his trademark humour, “Everyone should have kids. They are the greatest joy in the world. But they are also terrorists. You'll realize this as soon as they are born and they start using sleep deprivation to break you.”

The following tips could make your life a little easier during this harrowing period.

  • Stick to an early bedtime so that your baby does not get overtired and cranky.
  • Follow a soothing, consistent bedtime routine.
  • Make sure your baby is well-fed, wrapped cozily and content.
  • After some rocking and humming, put your baby in the crib as soon as he is drowsy.
  • Resist the urge to rush and pick him up the minute he wakes up and cries.
  • Opt for a diaper during the night instead of a cloth nappy to keep him dry and comfortable.
