Baby's First Haircut

Getting your baby's first hair cut is an emotional, yet, exhilarating event. Seeing your child without his hair is moving and experiential. A lot of Indian cultures celebrate this ceremony popularly known as Mundan. On this auspicious occasion, it is essential to prepare the child for same. A lot of times children are scared to be surrounded with so many people and start crying. Keeping their favorite food or toy handy to divert child’s attention will help the first-time moms. It should also be ensured that the tool is properly washed and free from any bacteria that can cause harm to the child. Thereafter, making them comfortable with their first hair-cut is also parent's responsibility as the child may or may not like a shave-head.

In Hindu culture, Mundan ceremony has much more importance than just a hair-cut. It is believed to impart positivity and peace to the baby, and cut the negativity from past life. Also, it is believed to enhance baby's hair growth and keep his head cool in the hot months of summer. Thus, baby's first hair cut is considered sacred in Hindu culture and requires considerable preparation and management.

According to Parents, "Let your child bring a lovey and a small toy. These will help him stay calm and keep his hands occupied. You might also hide a treat in your purse for afterward. Before the barber begins, swing the chair away from the mirror so your child doesn't fixate on the scissors.”

Asking your baby for his opinion is advisable and in case of hard feelings, make them realize they look better and keep them happy.
