Asthma In Children: All You Need To Know

Apollo Hospitals, Apollo HospitalsApollo Hospitals

If your child has asthma, it would be disheartening to see her suffer when she has asthmatic attacks. As far as this condition is concerned, some children outgrow it; but in most of the cases, it continues into adulthood. The symptoms of paediatric asthma are coughing, wheezing, difficulty in breathing, and frequent colds. If your child is suffering from asthma, you need to make sure that he is kept away from anything that can trigger an asthma attack. Pollens, dust allergy, food allergy, stress, panic situations or an attack of common cold are some of the triggers of an asthmatic attack.

According to a research, ‘How Asthma affects Children Emotionally and Behaviourally’, by Gayle Antonacci of the University of Pittsburgh, in addition to depression and loneliness, asthmatic children, are also likely to suffer from a sense of low self-esteem due to an avoidance of sports activities. This can negatively impact peer relationships. A second behavioural effect of asthma includes a drop in school attendance rates.

But, it definitely does not mean that if your child is suffering from asthma, she cannot excel in academics or sports or any other activity that is of interest to her. With proper control and management, your child can live a normal and successful life. A great example is the iconic actor, Amitabh Bachchan, who has asthma, but keeps it under control, and continues to work hard and leads an exhausting daily life, thus inspiring us even at 70+ years of age. We also have swimmer Nancy Hogshead-Makar who won 3 gold medals and 1 silver medal at the 1984 Olympics despite being an asthmatic.
