ParentCircle

With her single-minded dedication and strong will to succeed, 18-year-old  Hima Das has created history by becoming the first Indian athlete to win a gold medal in the track event at the Under-20 World Championship.

Hailing from a remote village, Dhing, in Assam, Hima's win is even more heartening because she emerged triumphant despite the hurdles of poverty and the lack of facilities.

She is the youngest of five siblings born to Jomali and Ronjit Das. Coming from a poor farming community, Hima's father did not have the money to nurture her sporting career. Hima did not even have a proper place to train. She would train in her father's field and play football on a muddy field in her village school. "I played for the local clubs as a striker and used to think that maybe one day I would play for India," she says. A suggestion from her Physical Education teacher to enroll in an individual sporting event changed the course of her life and the rest is history.

Her success against all odds can be an inspiration to thousands of youngsters, who want to make it big in the sporting arena. Your child can learn a valuable lesson from Hima's life — that dedication, hard work and a winning spirit can move mountains. Read this ClipBook to know more about this amazing girl.
