14 Ways To Make Veganism A Part Of Your Life

ParentCircle

Veganism is hugely popular right now. But do you, like most people, think it an exotic, expensive fad? In the West, it is true that vegans talk of plant-based foods, nut butters, almond/soy/cashew milk, vegan cheese and, so on. This may seem confusing. But it really isn't. For instance, Indians already cook with plant-based oils -- sesame (gingelly), coconut, groundnut, mustard, sunflower or olive oil. And many of us are vegetarians, avoiding meat, eggs and seafood. But vegans do not use any animal products including dairy (ghee, butter, cream, cheese or curd), meat, eggs, seafood, or even, honey (because it is sourced from bees). So, there is a difference between being vegetarian and being vegan.

Also, did you know that traditional Indian breakfasts without ghee or butter in them are vegan? Like fluffy idlis and crispy dosas served with coconut or peanut or coriander/mint chutney and sambar. And, to make your cooking more vegan, you could start with simple steps like using coconut milk instead of heavy cream or curd, to thicken gravies. See, veganism is not that difficult, after all.
